Pennsylvania County Courthouses for Genealogy Research
The most essential records for genealogists are maintained by the county governments of Pennsylvania.
Traditionally these county offices were called the “county courthouse.” Today they can be called “government service center”, “county administration", "county offices", and a variety of other terms.
Some counties have pulled their oldest records into a separate archive or given them to the local historical or genealogical society. Many counties have microfilmed or digitized some of their records. The status, location, and accessibility of historical records changes constantly. The best course of action is to check the county website, or email the county offices to ask for what you want.
A special note about Philadelphia: Philadelphia began as a county in 1682 and then incorporated as a city in 1854. All the records from the townships that made up Philadelphia County are now kept by the City of Philadelphia. Philadelphia is run by City Hall and it performs all the functions that a county government would perform in Pennsylvania.
